Wisdom’s Invitation

“Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭9:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Have you ever respected someone so much that the last thing you wanted to do was offend them? Maybe it’s a spouse, or a leader, or a friend—we all know that one person that we look up to more than anything, that the last thing we would ever want to do is to offend them in any way.

How much more then, should be have this same affection towards God? This fear in Proverbs is not one that is frightening. This fear is a deep, sovereign respect for God. When we have such respect for God, we won’t want to do anything to offend Him.

It is this deep sense of respect that actually is the starting point to our wisdom. Do you need direction? Is being decisive hard for you? Do you need clarity on a situation you are walking through? Let your wisdom flow out of your respect and honor for Him. When he is the basis and foundation of everything we do and every decision we make, we simply cannot go wrong. Remember those old school bracelets—WWJD? I loved those! And it’s a mantra we should still live by.

When we live life through the filter of what Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit would do, we simply cannot fail!

When we know Him, like truly know Him, then it’s easier to have sound judgment. I think about my husband. I know the way he thinks and operates. So sometimes if I need to make a quick decision and I can’t get ahold of him, I am confident making the decision because I know him. I know what he would think, I know how he would respond. I also know him enough to know that if I missed it just a little, he would have grace because he loves me. When we know God, and we are in tune with voice, we can make decisions knowing what he would do and how he would want us to respond. And, if we “miss the mark,” we know that he has grace for us as we are pursuing Him, and He will course correct our mistakes as He sees fit.

Today, whatever decisions and choices you are wrestling with, filter it through the wisdom and knowledge of Christ. What would Jesus do? How would the Father respond? What is Holy Spirit saying? If we listen closely, we can hear and know. Stay close to Jesus. Truly knowing Him gives us all the wisdom and clarity we have need of.
